WorkFit Update: August 2023

Earlier this month, Florence celebrated her 1 year anniversary at Searcy’s where she works as a Conference and Training Waiter.

Florence also works as a General Catering Assistant at Baxter Storey. She was recently awarded a certificate for being a finalist in the Baxter Storey internal People Awards in the Front of House Star of the Year category! Congratulations Florence!

People who have Down’s syndrome who work and also receive some benefits need to keep the Department of Work & Pensions informed of any changes to their hours. Our Benefits Officer, Helen, has given an update on this important issue. Please take some time to review this and how it might affect you:

Earnings and benefits for people who have Down’s syndrome – Downs Syndrome Association (downs-syndrome.org.uk)

You can also call our Helpline to talk to Helen directly. Ring 0333 1212300 or email helen.wild@downs-syndrome.org.uk. Helen is available on Monday and Thursday from 10am-4pm and on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am-12.30pm.

Do you live in Leicester?

We are working with a private hospital in Leicester to develop an opportunity for either a Catering Assistant, a Ward Host/Hostess or a Housekeeper.

If you have Down’s syndrome and would like to work in catering, food service or housekeeping, this opportunity might be for you! Please email us at dsworkfit@downs-syndrome.org.uk to speak to a WorkFit Officer and find out more.

Flexible part-time hours would be agreed to suit the candidate (e.g. 2-3 days a week, 4-5 hours per day).

We also have opportunities across other areas of England and Wales, so do register for our WorkFit programme via our website if you want to know more.

We are starting to look forward to World Down Syndrome Day next year, and the official 2024 #LotsOfSocks design will soon be revealed!
If you’re looking for your next corporate giveaway or just need something to brighten your wardrobe, we’ve got the solution and you’ll be supporting the great work of the Down’s Syndrome Association. Follow us on social media for the latest information.
If you are an employer and would like more information on bulk ordering #LotsofSocks, please contact us on dsworkfit@downs-syndrome.org.uk

It was wonderful to be involved in the The Big Logistics Diversity Challenge this year, connecting with so many organisations from the logistics industry, all demonstrating their passion, support and enthusiasm to improve equality, diversity and inclusion, as well as celebrating the business benefits attained by establishing a diverse workforce. Thank you to Nimble Media Ltd and Talent in Logistics for inviting us!

Check out this great video from the day – we’re happy to see Freya and rest of the team from GXO Logistics on here too!

Thank you to all of our employers for their continued support of our WorkFit programme, and good luck to everyone starting new roles this month.
